My husband and I went out to one of our old favorites on the last day of Ramadan, Raoucha & Kandahar. It sounds like one restaurant, but it’s actually two. Raoucha is the Lebanese restaurant on the right when you exit the elevator and Kandahar is the Indian restaurant on your left. We dined in Kandahar.

The first thing you notice here is the ambience. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and it’s rather quiet, even with a full house. There are about three seating areas in the restaurant, including a very small non-smoking section. We sat in the first small seating area with a nice view of the setting sun and the street below. This section is not the non-smoking section, but it’s isolated enough that no smoke drifted our way.

We ordered paneer makhani to share. We always order this every time we go. It’s a vegetarian dish made up of large pieces of paneer in a tomato and cream based sauce. I ordered an eggplant and tomato dish, sorry I can’t remember the name, and my husband ordered lamb chops. On the side we ordered plain rice and naan for me and keema pulao, that’s rice with lamb and herbs, for him. All together our meal cost around 280LE.

Kandahar gives you several small appetizers to munch on before your meal arrives. Some are delicious, some a bit too strong for my taste. They also present you with a 13LE bottle of water.

All of the food is delicious, but my husband always complains that the portions are too small for the meat dishes. Nevertheless, we always leave with a doggy bag.

My only complaint about Kandahar is that sometimes the staff is a little too overzealous. Our plates were changed four times between the appetizers and the main course without any explanation. They are also eager to serve you unless you say otherwise and it seems to pain them to see you pour your own water from the bottle left at your table. However, these are minor quibbles at a great restaurant.
