Murder Mystery by Gene Thompson

This book is about the murder of Miriam Welles, an art collector, and the client of attorney Dade Cooley.  She is found in her garage, crushed by her car during a storm.  In the beginning, the police classify her demise as an accident due to a faulty brake.  As soon as Dade hears about her death, he suspects that it wasn’t an accident at all and begins to investigate.

This mystery slowly grabbed my attention.  At first I found it difficult to keep track of all the characters and their relationship to each other, but by the middle of the book I was hooked.

One of the best parts about this book was the dialogue.  It was witty and fast-paced, especially between Dade and his wife, Ellen.  This helped to bring their relationship to life and really kept the book feeling fresh.  It was also a great way to bring out the characters’ personalities and was so true to life.  The dialogue helped establish the characters beyond clichés.

The twist at the end also caught me by surprise and provided a great resolution to the story.  Admittedly, I never figure out who the killer is in any mystery book, but it was great to see how logical Dade was and how he figured out the clues.
