Kissing Christmas Goodbye: An Agatha Raisin Mystery by M.C. Beaton

Agatha Raisin is dreaming of Christmas and keeping her detective agency running.  This isn’t really a Christmas book, though.  Agatha wants the perfect Christmas she never had growing up and this theme runs in the background of the mystery.  She receives a letter from Mrs. Tamworthy, a wealthy widow in a neighboring village, saying that she thinks a member of her family is going to kill her.  Agatha is intrigued by the idea of a fancy manor house and high tea and can’t resist finding out if Mrs. Tamworthy is serious or crazy.

Along the way, she hires a new young detective named Toni Gilmour.  Agatha become invested in her future and helps her develop her skills as a detective.

I am excited about the new character of Toni and I hope to see her in later books.  She really brought out a different side of Agatha.  Agatha was jealous of her youth and luck, but also felt a bit maternal towards her.  Agatha references her childhood growing up with parents who were alcoholics, so I guess she can identify with Toni in that regard.

I didn’t solve the mystery or see why the murderer did it, but I enjoyed Agatha’s methods and seeing her business thrive.  I did wish that there was more Christmas spirit in the book, though.  However, Agatha’s Christmas was certainly something.
